Use Vertical Space in your Closet

Take advantage of vertical space in your closet, especially on the wall behind your closet door. Use hooks to hang purses or clothing you plan to wear again.

Create Zones in your Closet

Just as you've already done in your Kitchen, establish "zones" in your closet. A zone in your closet can be a shelf, drawer or clothing rod. Sample zones include a shelf for jeans, a drawer for pajamas or a drawer for exercise clothing.

Shoeboxs can make great drawer dividers

Place a shoebox in a dresser drawer to store small items, such as socks. The shoebox creates a boundary for the socks so they stay in one place. Multiple boxes or dividers can typically fit in a drawer.

Gain Space in your Closet

The easiest way to gain space in your closet is to eliminate duplicates and unused clothing items. If you have multiples, ask yourself these questions:

•Do I frequently wear this item?
•Is this comfortable to wear?

•Do I have too many?

•Do I need to keep more than one?

Sort your Clothing

Once you've removed all the items from a particular space, start putting similar items together. For example, separate your short sleeve shirts from your 3/4 lenght shirts from your long sleeve shirts. Sorting your clothing makes it much easier to see what you have so you can stay organized!

Reorganize your Closet and focus on one area at a time

As you reorganize your Closet, focus on one area at a time, such as one shelf, one drawer or one clothing rod. This way, you won't feel so overwhelmed. Get started by removing all the items from the chosen space.

It's Time to Switch out Seasonal Clothes

Evaluate your summer wardrobe before you pack it up for the winter. Donate any items that no longer fit or are uncomfortable to wear.

Label Common Items

Label items that are used often, yet commonly misplaced. Items with labels are more likely to be returned to the stored location. For example, label a couple of pens that you like to keep near your phone with a "Phone" label.

Garage Sale Prep: Reuse Plastic Bags

Save plastic shopping bags prior to your garage sale. Store the bags in a container or mesh laundry basket and place near your "check out" area for easy access.

Label your Beach Towels

Embroider or mark your beach towels with your initial or a number so you can easily identify your towel.

Never Search for your Keys

Designate a spot for your keys - whether it's a bowl, container or small hook. When you get home, simply place your keys in this location. If you can discipline yourself to do this each time you walk in the door you will always know where your keys are and will never have to search for them.

Garage Sale Prep: Open "Boxed" Items

If any of the items you plan to sell are in a box without a photo on the outside, you may want to take the item out of the box. You can place the empty box behind the item so the shoppers can see that you still have the original packaging.

Garage Sale Prep: Displaying Books

Display books so they are easy for shoppers to reach and easy for them to read the titles. If you don't have a bookshelf, place books on a table using shallow totes or boxes. Containing the books in a tote will keep the book organized all day. Arrange the books in order by size, with the taller books toward the back and make sure all the titles face the same way.

Garage Sale Prep: Picture Frames

Devote an area to picture frames and decoration. Display larger frames toward the back and shorter frames toward the front. Group sets and similar frames together.

Garage Sale Prep: Displaying Items

Good displays make it easier for shoppers to see all of your items. When setting up your items, visualize how a department store would display the item(s) and then try to emulate it.

Garage Sale Prep: Create "Sections"

Organize your sale into distinct sections or departments. First, sort your items for sale and group similar items together on a table. Then, display all your kitchen-related items together on one table, all your books on another, toys on another, etc.

Garage Sale Prep: Spacing Tables

Set your tables a minimum of 36 inches apart because people typically shop longer if they don’t feel crowded. To maximize space in your garage, line tables along the perimeter and double them up in the center (see the graphic above).

Garage Sale Prep: Gather Tables

Displaying your items on tables makes it easier for people to shop at your sale. A few weeks before your sale gather and locate tables to use. Ask family members, neighbors, and friends. If you're struggling with finding tables, be creative - two saw horses or six milk crates with a solid surface on top can create tables!

Garage Sale Prep: Signage

Make sure your garage sale signs are easy to read and contain a visible arrow so shoppers can easily find your sale.
